Railway stations across Scotland have been awarded their annual accolades from the charity for Scotland’s environment, Keep Scotland Beautiful, as part of the Tidy Stations Standards Programme Awards – designed to assess and reward environmental management at stations.

Keep Scotland Beautiful, working in partnership with ScotRail, visited all of Scotland’s railway stations in 2014 to evaluate their approach to issues ranging from clearing litter and recycling, to waste management and community links.

The criteria for assessment includes:

  • Station cleanliness, including car park entrances, concourses and platforms owned by ScotRail;
  • Recycling provision for staff and the public;
  • Approaches to the station;
  • Community participation;
  • Waste management;
  • Staff knowledge and customer engagement.

Out of all the stations audited, Kinghorn in Fife was rated the best in Scotland. It received the top Platinum accolade in recognition of staff involvement with the local community to improve the overall environment of the station.

An additional 16 stations scooped Gold awards, while 68 received Silver and 252 Bronze – an improvement on the 2011/12 audit.  A list of all award winning stations and level of merit can be found here.

“We are delighted with the overall outcome of the Tidy Stations Standards Programme Awards. It has been a great success thanks to the hard work and dedication of ScotRail staff and local communities.

“This year saw a significant increase in the number of stations meeting Gold and Silver standards, and we look forward to continuing our work with ScotRail to help make Scotland cleaner, greener and more sustainable.”

The Platinum award-winning station’s success was down to its close work with the local community, as part of ScotRail’s Adopt a Station programme.

When it was first assessed in 2011, Kinghorn failed to receive a Bronze award. However, four years later, thanks to ScotRail’s partnership with local artists Lynette and Douglas Gray, the station now hosts an art gallery and landscaped garden.

Jacqui Taggart, ScotRail’s Customer Experience Director, said:

“We are extremely proud of the hard work that our staff and local communities put in every day to make our stations not only environmentally friendly but – to those who pass through – more than just a platform for boarding or stepping off a train.

“We would like to thank Keep Scotland Beautiful for the work it does to help us continually improve our environmental footprint; our staff at Kinghorn, and the station’s adopters, Lynette and Douglas, for their dedication to transforming the space and making it into the welcoming community hub that it is today.”

Keep Scotland Beautiful will continue to work closely with ScotRail to identify measures that can be undertaken to help all stations improve further, and looks forward to more competition for future Platinum awards.

Kinghorn station will now serve as a leading example as to how stations can work with the community through the ScotRail Adopt a Station programme – making their own station a local focal point for a clean, green environment and a hub the community can be proud of.

Under this initiative, volunteers can apply to do anything from take part in gardening, all the way through to repurpose part of a station for community use – such as create a community shop, art gallery or heritage centre.   3. Keep Scotland Beautiful carried out the last audit in 2011/12. The Platinum winner was Whitecraigs and the overall awards included: 13 Gold, 29 Silver and the remainder Bronze.
  4. The audits were carried out with the support of previous ScotRail operator FirstGroup. In April 2015, operation of the ScotRail franchise transferred to Abellio.
